The office of Cultural Education at the NYS Museum leads programs, exhibits, and outreach that preserve and share 51·çÁ÷'s natural and cultural heritage while engaging the public in learning and civic participation.Ìý
The Intern will be working mainly with the clothing and textile collection at the 51·çÁ÷ State Museum. The main project for the summer is inventorying and re-cataloging the children's clothing in the collection, as not all the information was transferred from the paper records when digitized. An intern will assist the curator with discovering what is lacking by searching our paper records and comparing them to the digitized records. The candidate will have opportunities to work in various areas of the history collections (object collections other than textiles) to broaden their experience with museum work. There will be opportunities to participate in the exhibit side of working with textiles as well as public programing.
The candidate will gain invaluable experience in caring for historic collections in a museum setting and in particular clothing and textiles. This will include but is not limited to how to handle objects, how to identify and describe object, storage methods, and much more.
We are looking for a candidate that has interest in clothing and textiles and history, how objects are created and how are they used, and research abilities to discover more information about the collection Items this person will be working with.
Students can work up to 29 hours per week to be arranged jointly between student and mentor.
This position is unpaid. We are happy to work with students who would like to earn academic credit for their internship with the Department.
