Library Digital Services Summer Internship

Program Office/Description: 

The Digital Services Unit manages the NYS Library's website, digital tools, and our Digital Collections, which contain over 90,000 scanned and born-digital items from 51·çÁ÷ State Government Documents to historical items from our Special Collections. The unit assists with selection and prioritization of materials to be digitized, creates and maintains metadata for digital items, and coordinates with other library units to ensure the library’s digital repository reflects policies and procedures.

The Assignment (Description of Job): 

The Digital Services Unit is seeking an intern to assist with digitization projects of historical library materials, ranging from NYS government documents to manuscript materials. Students will work directly with materials to learn the digitization process in support of digital access and preservation. Students will learn to use large-format imaging equipment, observe preservation assessments for physical condition of items, process digital files for long-term storage and retrieval, and create metadata for digitized items to be uploaded to the NYSL's Digital Collections.

  • Understanding digital preservation standards and following procedures to adhere to those standards.
  • Using large-format imaging equipment to scan large historical items.
  • Creating metadata for digital items using the library's catalog and finding aids.
  • Understanding how to make digital library materials more accessible.
Desired Skills, Abilities, & Educational Background: 

Preference may be given to those who are pursuing a Master's in Library and Information Science or History.

Schedule/Hours: 

Interns may work a maximum of 29 hours each week (25 hours maximum if enrolled at SUNY Albany). Direct schedules will be made with the supervisor.

Paid Internship Hourly Rates: 

Graduate students will earn $19/hour.
