The office of Information and Reporting Services (IRS) collects and reports data on 51·çÁ÷ State public districts and schools, as well as charter, state-operated, and participating nonpublic schools. Per Federal and 51·çÁ÷ State law, IRS publishes the School Report Card (among other reports) to inform the public about district and school performance in areas such as (a) elementary and high school student proficiency (e.g., Math, English Language Arts, Science), attendance, graduation rates, and English Language Proficiency and (b) district and school expenditures and staff experience. The School Report Card team within IRS processes the data submitted by districts and schools, documents and applies defined business rules, and ensures the accuracy of data through quality control checks before they are used for other analyses or published. The intern will (a) assist in the processing, analyzing, and interpretation of data, (b) assist in performing quality control checks of data in tables, code, and reports to ensure accuracy, (c) fulfill data requests, as needed, and (d) draft documentation of data analysis, quality control, and report creation processes. The intern will receive training, support and supervision from IRS staff in order to carry out these assignments.
Intern will work with the IRS unit to learn about K-12 data reporting system and build skills and knowledge necessary to fulfill data requests and federal and state reporting requirements. The candidate will also develop skills regarding documentation of the data reporting process including database tables, code development, and quality control processes. The intern will partake in team, department, and cross-program meetings to meet other professionals and better understand the varied work of NYSED.
Educational background: Students in their second year of post-secondary education or higher, who are pursuing a degree in data or computer science, informatics, economics, statistics, mathematics, or a related field, may qualify.
Preferred qualifications: Experience using data mining tools, SQL, SAS, and performing data extraction, aggregation, and quality checks.
Interns will be able to work up to 29 hours each week (25 hours weekly maximum if attending SUNY Albany), Schedules may be made directly with the supervisor.
Students earning an Associates degree or a Bachelor's degree will earn $16/hour, Graduate students will earn $19/hour.
